The foods we eat affect how our bodies feel. When we choose to eat foods that are high in salts, sugars, and fats on a regular basis, our bodies will feel unhealthy over time. On the other hand, making the decision to eat wholesome foods will make our bodies feel wonderful. The Mediterranean diet is considered the gold standard of healthy eating for its emphasis on minimally processed foods and emphasis on eating foods like olive oils, fish, and cheese.
While there are a wide range of options to choose from when we go to the grocery to buy these foods, there are important details to look for when making your selection:
- Olive oil: Olive oil is an important source of good fat in the Mediterranean diet. Extra virgin olive oil is the best way to go because it uses olives that are mechanically grinded, instead of chemically processed. It is also praised for its high nutrition, superior taste, and antioxidants that make you feel healthy.
- Fish: Fish are the go-to source of omega-3 fatty acids, an essential heart healthy chemical that lowers blood pressure and swelling. Salmon and tuna are fish most commonly associated with omega-3, but you can also choose mackerel, lake trout, and herring for more variety. White fish, such as catfish and grouper, may not offer the same omega-3 fatty acids, but are still an excellent source of protein without adding fat and cholesterol.
- Cheese: Cheese should be approached the same way spices are, as a supplement to top salads and other dishes. While cheese is a great source of protein and calcium, it also contains sodium and cholesterol that should be eaten sparingly. Avoid anything that says ‘cheese product’ as they contain heavy amounts of artificial ingredients.
