What is a Holter Monitor?

Holter monitors are one of the most technically advanced ways for doctors to monitor your heart with more accuracy than a traditional electrocardiogram (ECG). These monitors are typically fitted to the patient after they have had an ECG for further monitoring and interpretation of electrical activity of the heart. Holter monitors are worn for a period of 24 hours or longer to help doctors determine a more definitive diagnosis.

These cardiac monitoring solutions are fitted by a doctor who attaches several wires to discs that stick to your chest. The discs, called electrodes, attach to your chest by a sticky gel, or may be taped on for more security. Electrodes monitor electrical impulses of the heart within the period of time you would be wearing the monitor.  Typically you will continue on your daily routine when wearing the heart monitor so the doctor can see how your heart performs on a day to day basis.

If your doctor doesn’t see any irregularities within your initial ECG and believe that your symptoms might suggest periodic irregular heart rhythms, wearing the monitor for a day or two may be able to help detect any arrhythmias. You may be asked by your doctor to keep a log of daily activities and what you were doing if you experienced any abnormalities.
