Telemetry Unit Monitors Ensure Health of Cardiac Patients

Telemetry monitoring is a broad term that involves monitoring any kind of activity that can be measured electronically, and translating measurable results into an observable spectrum that can be read by people. In the medical world these machines are vital to recording the activities and vital signs of cardiac patients. Telemetry unit monitors are commonly used to monitor patients who are:

  • Recovering from a serious heart problem such as a heart attack
  • Having lung problems such as a blood clots or fluid buildup
  • Under the effects of anesthetics during surgery
  • Taking certain medicines that affect the heart
  • Currently in shock, or have an injury that can lead to shock
  • Suffering from a serious medical condition such as a stroke or kidney failure

These machines differ from their smaller cardiac monitoring counterparts in that they are usually monitored in real time during the course of treatment. Patients recovering from injuries and heart problems usually undergo physical therapy. During these sessions, a trained nurse will hook up the monitor and observe the reading on the machines while the patient completes the therapy. During surgery involving anesthetics, telemetry unit monitors are important to make sure that any drops in blood pressure or heart rate are immediately noticed. Without the help of a telemetry monitor potentially life threatening problems could occur on the operating table.

To attach the monitor, nurses first have to clean the body. Then they attach, anywhere between 3 and 12, electrode sticky pads to various parts of the body. The amount and the placement depend on the situation for which the monitor is being used. Once attached, the electrodes send information to a machine that then translates and projects the information on the monitor. A nurse will continually watch the monitor and make note of any changes. If they see a problem or see something that can lead to a problem they will call for help and have the problem resolved as soon as possible.
