The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in four deaths is a result of heart disease. Although the organization goes on to point out that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, a person’s gender does have an impact on their heart health.

Women are Older
Health magazine published an article which revealed that most women have their first heart attack around the age of 70, while the average age for a heart attack in a man is 66. The article also pointed out that a man’s risk of suffering a heart attack begins to rise after age 45, yet a woman’s risk doesn’t start to climb until she reaches the age of 55.

More Deaths Occur in Women
The American Heart Association states that there are more heart attack deaths among women than men. In fact, they point out that 26 percent of women who are over the age of 45 die within a year after suffering a heart attack, while this only occurs in 19 percent of men. The institution suggests that this may be because that women tend to be older when they have their first heart attack than men. It may be harder for their bodies to recover fully.

Women Have Different Symptoms
Another way men and women differ when it comes to heart attacks are the symptoms. Men tend to experience more prominent symptoms, while women’s are typically more subtle. Men more often have chest pain or pressure, a heavy arm, and shortness of breath. Women may feel weak, tired, nauseous, dizzy, and they may even experience cold sweats.

Women need to pay closer attention to their bodies and watch for any signs or symptoms that a heart attack may be occurring. A cardiologist may even want to have your heart monitored as part of your treatment plan. Medicomp’s Holter patch is an excellent tool and you can learn more about it by calling 800-234-3278.
